Why You Need More Joy In Your Life

I had a one-off coaching session recently with a lovely lady who has been struggling in business for quite a few years.

She came to me because she was having difficulty setting goals because nothing seemed to excite her very much. Her lack of focus and goals meant she was making very little time for her business and was stuck in a rut.

As a coach, I know that what is going on at the surface level is never what it seems and so the digging began.

After a few key questions, it became very clear to me that this lady had forgotten what joy felt like. She had gone so many years focusing on others rather than herself that she had forgotten what she enjoyed, what lit her up and what made her excited.

As human beings we get to experience ecstasy, joy, happiness, glee, excitement, adrenalin rushes…all that great stuff. Yet many women are walking around in a ‘zombie state’ just reacting to life as it goes by. They are numb.

When I asked this lady to think of a list of things that bring her joy she couldn’t even think of one thing. She had experienced a lot of pain in her life and one result of that was no longer allowing herself to be hopeful because she just assumed that anything good that happened to her would be taken away again…so why bother trying?

This is no way to live and you will never get very far in anything let alone in business unless you look after yourself and put your wellbeing first. Joy, fun and pleasure are the forgotten heroes of wellbeing!

The more we treat ourselves like absolute queens the happier, more productive and more successful we will be. Full stop.

So I got to asking other women that are hot on their self-care what they love to do. Maybe if you resonate with this post and are also struggling with where to start then you’ll pick up some great ideas to try out for yourself.

The first step is to try some self-care and self-love activities and see which you enjoy. Then you can go on to make your own personalised list.

  • People watching in a coffee shop with a good book and a latte.
  • Meeting friends to drink wine and catch up on life.
  • A movie night in by yourself.
  • Eating in a beautiful restaurant.
  • A bubble bath.
  • Walking out in nature with your pets and loved ones.
  • A cup of tea in bed in the morning with Netflix.
  • Massages.
  • Drawing or painting.
  • Shopping.
  • Cooking something new.
  • Anything that involves an elasticated waistband.

As far as I’m concerned the foundation to any success in life is self-compassion and self-care. It gives us more self-belief, reduces procrastination and 10x your results because you are being the best you that you can be. I hope these ideas will act as a starting point for you to put together your own self care plan.
