A New Way To Overcome Fear

You really have to start facing your fears rather than running away from them. In this post I want to talk about a new way to overcome fear and how to overcome anxiety around certain topics. 

I come across so many women who tell me their fears around starting up a business yet they have never sat with or explored those fears.

My own commitment to living in a way that aligns fully with what I teach and earlier this year I was forced to do this in a hugely frightening way. Well, who am I kidding…living in full alignment with what you teach is always frightening and challenging but being the example is the best way to encourage and manifest change in others.

After going through probably one of the most difficult few months of my life, I was crying myself to sleep when I was reminded of something I had read recently in a beautiful book about fear. I was encouraged to sit with my fear, rather than let it consume and control me.

The fear I felt so deeply right then was the fear of being alone.

It’s a classic.

Yet for weeks I had just let the fear of it wash over me without ever questioning it. Without ever confronting it.

So I sat with it and I literally asked myself some questions out loud.

“What are you really afraid of here?” I asked myself. So followed a stream of words from my mouth summing up the fears that were floating around in my head.

“Ok,” I responded to myself, “but are you really alone?”

That one stumped me. No, I wasn’t really alone. I had my family, to whom I am very close. I know without a shadow of a doubt they will always be there for me. I have the most incredible friends, a handful of whom I know would do anything for me and be there for me no matter what.

So slowly my brain slowed down. The breathing became deeper. The fear started to subside. I wasn’t alone.

When I looked at my actual reality…I wasn’t ever going to be alone. I’m good at making new friends. If I wasn’t…I could learn.

You see, when you really face your fear down then 99% of the time you’ll find that it’s completely unfounded. Or maybe it is a valid fear? If so, chances are there’s not much you can do about it and it’s useless wasting time on it.

Try this yourself. What big fear is currently holding you back? Sit with it. Look at the evidence. Confront it. I bet you’ll find that there’s nothing to be scared of at all.
